Originating from humourous scroll paintings created during the 6th and 7th centuries, the name came into use in the 19th century. In 1815, Hokusai (1760-1849), a popular woodblock artist, used manga to describe his works.

His original term for his artwork was made of the words "man," meaning "in spite of oneself," "lax" or "whimsical," and "ga," meaning "picture." During the late 19th century comic strips started appearing in newspapers.

The modern day father of manga was Osamu Tezuka. He was inspired and influenced by Fleischer Studios and Walt Disney, then created and developed his own style.

These cartoons from post-war Japan evolved into the unique, captivating, explosive east-meets-west fusion of art, drama, humour, action, adventure and dynamic story telling that we fans - otaku, of all ages and sex relish today.

Anime is a style of cartoon animation originating in Japan. Characterized by character and background styles that may be created and drawn by hand, or using computers - or both.

Storylines may feature a variety of characters and may be set in different locations and in different eras.

A multitude of different genres exist - aimed at a diverse audience range. They include action, adventure, children's stories, adult stories, comedy, drama, erotica (hentai), medieval fantasy, occult/horror, romance, history, religion, science fiction - and many more genres and sub-genres.

Distributed in mass media, including movies, television, DVDs, console and computer games. The landscape of animation has been changed forever.
